It’s a charming historical building with 10 unique rooms and is just a short walking distance from good eats, shopping, and entertainment. If you would like to get to know us a little better before your stay, here are 5 facts about the boutique inn itself.
19th Century Sailmakers Shop
Before becoming the independent inn we are today, the Sailmakers House was home to John Holbrook, who purchased the property in 1822. He was a 19th century sailmaker who did his business out of what is now the inn today. We acquired the residence in 2017 and did a total makeover, though still keeping the historical charm of the building.
Close Distance to Historical Sites
Being in the city, the convenience of being able to walk just about everywhere is one of our biggest perks. Just down the road is Strawbery Banke, an outdoor history museum. They offer tours as well as exhibits. Not too much further is Prescott Park, which has a beautiful waterfront view, garden, as well as a plethora of spots to take a seat and soak in the beauty of it all!
Historic Neighborhood
The Sailmakers House sits in the oldest neighborhood in New Hampshire to be settled by Europeans. The history goes all the way back to 1630. There are roughly 37 restored houses there, 17 of which are open to the public with the historic interiors. As you walk around, you will notice the narrow streets and old houses. Portsmouth holds a lot of history and we are lucky enough to be a part of it!
Original Architecture of the House
The city of Portsmouth likes to keep many of the historic houses in town in their original condition. With that being said, we were able to embrace the beauty of the building and work our magic by incorporating the historic and maritime themes of the city, while also putting our own antique twist on the interior.
